In developmental biology, \"organisers\" are small groups of cells with an outsized influence: they send signals that instruct neighbouring cells what to become and how to arrange themselves, effectively shaping the body plan as an embryo develops. The idea comes from classic work by Hans Spemann and Hilde Mangold in 1924, who showed that a specific region of a newt embryo could trigger the formation of an entire secondary body axis when transplanted elsewhere.<\/p>
